Throughout the Gospels we meet a Jesus who practiced the discipline of noticing people who acted in ways that gave expression to God’s heart in the world. Whereas the religious types of Jesus’ day were often blinded to these expressions of faith, gratitude, compassion, contrition, courage, childlikeness, and love, Jesus drew attention to these curious acts because they were snapshots of another reality – a God-infused reality that he desperately wanted his disciples to see and practice in their daily lives. These ordinary people in ordinary places were where Jesus found living examples for his followers to emulate. By noticing, Jesus showed us that all of life can be saturated with spiritual meaning.
