The kingdom is our family, our places of work, public schools, neighborhoods, the entertainment industry, government institutions, politics, media, literature, universities, and, of course, our local church. The church is an outpost in the larger world of the kingdom. It must be said that the church is not the kingdom but only a part of it. The real action is Monday through Saturday, when Christians then behave in ways natural for the spiritually mature, and the result is impact. The disciple does what a disciple’s character dictates. He or she meets needs, lives the truth, and stands up for the weak and disenfranchised. On this last point, Bonhoeffer was clear: Unless the church stands between the oppressed and the oppressor, it is not being the church.
